15 October 1492: Christopher Columbus landed on an island in the West Indies he called San Salvador. The islanders gave him "certain dried leaves which give off a distinct smell".

He threw away the leaves because he didn’t know what to do with them.

A month later he was amazed to hear he should stick the leaves in his mouth and set fire to them. It’s tobacco, of course.
