Smoking is the biggest cause of amputations of the foot and leg. Every year in the UK, about 2000 heavy smokers lose a leg in this way. Smoke causes blood to get sticky, and blood vessels to get narrower. Blood then flows more slowly through the body.

It’s worse in parts farthest from the heart, such as the fingers and toes. When the blood supply can’t reach the foot, the foot gets a disease called gangrene and dies.
